My Answer: YES!
May 8th, 2008Wonderful music industry blog New Music Strategies has a great post asking Can Independent Record Stores Survive? If the title of this post isn’t emphatic enough, I’ll add a few more exclamation points (YES)!!!
The essence of his answer is that it boils down to real people with real recommendations. I could go off a long rant here about how I feel about music recommendation services. (I HATE THEM!) I could also equally rant about other reasons to support independent retailers. (supporting the local economy, etc, etc) But I don’t need to make this an idealistic rant, I love music. I love people who are passionate about something, anything, you could open up a Yo-yo store and I’d want to go because I’m sure your passion would rub off and I’d leave with two yo-yos.
[real enthusiasts]… want to be introduced to music that they don’t yet know they will absolutely love
I want your passion to rub off on me and I would much rather leave a store with not only something I didn’t go in there for, but something I had never even heard of before I went it, and something I absolutely love.
I love a lot of things, but the passion that I want to be contagious is my desire to support other peoples passions.
